About George Ivey
George in WyomingGeorge was born and raised in Asheville, North Carolina, and he graduated from Duke University with a degree in political science.  He spent his first years out of college working for United States Senator Terry Sanford in Washington, D.C., serving as a legislative aide for environment and energy issues.  He then spent more than seven years with The Nature Conservancy, including three years coordinating a community-based conservation program to benefit the Conasauga (CON-a-SAW-ga) River in Southeast Tennessee and North Georgia.  He then served more than six years as the Director of Development and North Carolina Office Director for Friends of Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Waynesville, North Carolina.  He has worked as a fundraising and project management consultant since late 2005.

George now lives in the Bethel community of Haywood County in Western North Carolina.  Since moving to Haywood County in 2001, he has served on the boards of directors for a half dozen different non-profit organizations, including current commitments to Haywood Waterways Association, Folkmoot USA, and the Fund for Haywood County.

It’s not all work, though.  A former state bicycling champion in North Carolina, George continues to get out on his bike whenever time allows.  He also enjoys hiking, birding, reading, and a healthy dose of traveling to Iceland, Arizona, the southeastern coast, and an assortment of other locations.  Chances are that he’s plotting another big adventure right now!
